| The Cevennes region is rich in high-quality local produce, a history of isolation and poverty having long driven the populations of these mountains and valleys towards the need for self-sufficiency. And these times are not that far in the past ... Thus, out of sheer necessity, many local skills and traditional techniques of production have survived. | TRADITIONAL MARKETS | Every day, in one or another of our villages, colourful markets are held where you will be able to buy, or simply browse and admire the natural products being sold by local farmers and producers. There are many authentic flavours to discover!
MARKETS IN ANDUZEThe traditional market is held on Thursday mornings all year round, and sprawls over a large area of the town. A night market is held in July and August on Tuesday evenings and the Christmas market takes place on the third Sunday of December.
THE FLEA MARKET Every Sunday morning, in the car park of ‘Super U' supermarket, this is one of the most well-stocked secondhand markets in the area, with very reasonable prices. Not to be missed! During the summer months you can also find car boot sales being held throughout the region. Friendly occasions, bringing bargains straight from the attic to the customer! | FAIRS | THE "Sweet and Savoury Fair" Special wines, breads, honey, jams, cheeses and charcuteries (cured meats) to tempt your nose and your taste buds. You will find not only regional products, but also cheeses, wines and charcuteries from other regions (Auvergne, the Pyrenees and Cantal among others). Everything is there to satisfy lovers of good food, young and old.
| Wine Fair The Wine and Regional Produce Fair is held in the magnificent setting of the Parc des Cordeliers and brings together produce from all the different regions of France over a period of two days.
| "Wool, Silk and Jewellery Fair" Textiles: You can see craftsmen and producers working from natural, raw materials - mohair, Angora, pure wool, linen, hemp, silk, sheepskin. The different stages of wool production are on show: breeding, tanning, spinning, dyeing, felting, weaving and knitting. Items and garments on sale range from skeins of wool, to woven and knitted sweaters, jackets, stoles, throws, clothes and scarves made out of painted silk, slippers, shapkas, felt hats... Jewels: You can see craftsmen carrying out their work using noble materials and using various, different techniques. | The Sweet Chestnut Festival
The breadfruit tree "the sweet chestnut", emblematic of the Cevennes since the XVIIth century, which grows easily on poor soil is the cultural reference of our Cevennes valleys and thus also of Anduze! On the acidic terrain of the first slopes at the gateway to the Cevennes, the sweet chestnut is ever present. "Castanea piquage de bajanas stiva" is a native species on which in ancient times the monks, who first cultivated this land, applied their early farming techniques. The festival programme includes : piquage de bajanas (presentation of old materials), "los bajanas" (bleached sweet chestnuts), "brasucade" (grilled sweet chestnuts). | The Christmas Market The Christmas Market has local craftsmen and producers of regional products selling their wares in the streets of the city. It also offers entertainment, music and Father Christmas's procession.
