Converted by force or persecuted, they had to take refuge in the woods and in caves to listen to their pastors. If they were discovered it was death or the galleys for men and prison or a convent for women. The word ‘desert' takes us back to the Bible and reminds us of the tribulations suffered by the Hebrews when they were pursued by the Egyptians in the Sinai desert. The museum, set up in the birthplace of Roland, one of the Camisard chiefs, gives us a good insight into the difficult life of the huguenots at that time. It contains a sequence of rooms displaying memories and poignant testimonies of their persecution and its consequences. Of special interest is a whole room devoted to the horrors of the galleys.

Wandering through the rooms of this group of old houses in Saint-Jean-du-Gard you will discover both the charms and the harshness of life in the past in the countryside, along with local products from the industries that were emerging in the villages at that time. | ST JEAN DU GARD 15 mins from Anduze www.museedescevennes.com | THE CAVE OF TRABUC H idden in all the hills and mountains of the Cevennes are caves and grottos, and one of the most beautiful of all is the cave of Trabuc. With its seven chambers, its lake, its natural bridges, and its thousands of stalagmites (from where it gets its nickname of the cave of 100,000 soldiers), Trabuc draws you down into the depths of the earth as if into the depths of geological time. There is a one-hour guided tour along a path of 1.2 km. Remember to bring warm clothes as the contrast between the temperature outside and the coolness of the cave can be quite dramatic in summer.
| MIALET 15 mins from Anduze www.grottes-de-france.com | LE PONT DU GARD This wonder of Roman architecture needs no introduction. Originally intended for the transportation of water to the city of Nîmes (Nemausus in latin) and for the thirsty crowds attending the bullring, this extraordinary aqueduct is still upright in all the glory of its honey-coloured stones which are particularly beautiful in the light of the setting sun. Protected by a large natural expanse of woods and rocks, it towers above the waters of the river Gardon, which sparkle with modern-day nymphs. The bridge is surrounded by a fascinating museum space, souvenir shops and stands selling refreshments and ice-creams.
