The Gardon

Le Gardon d'Anduze

Gardon, is the proper name given to the majority of the streams which run down the Cevennes valleys and meet, eventually forming the “GARD river”, a tributary of the Rhone after its passage under the famous Roman aqueduct, Le Pont du Gard.

Thus the Gardon of Anduze is a result of this confluence, creating a charming spot, the “Mescladou, not far from the famous bamboo plantation. After Anduze, the Gardon river emerges into land planted with vines and olive-trees, bordered with banks of reeds and wicker. It veers off towards the East under the Castle of Tornac, skirts the villages of Tornac, Massillargues-Atuech, Lézan, Cardet and Massanes joining the Gardon river at Alès, upstream from Ners, to become the “Gard”. It is still called Gardon by the locals as far up as the” Pont du Gard
